Director Kevin MacDonald and co-producer Ziggy Marley bring forth the most definitive look back at the life of Bob Marley, in the new documentary "Marley". From the formation of "The Wailers" and the comings and goings of different members of the band (including Peter Tosh and Jimmy Cliff), to Marley's dealings in Rastafarian and how it bled into his Reggae music; and also from his controversial lifestyle punctuated by being a "womanizer" (eleven children from seven different women) to his humanitarian nature, this in-depth (two and a half hour) documentary will immensely satisfy fan and novice alike. I, like many other younger American non-Rasta's, had grown up knowing Bob Marley for his more commercially catchy hits and from his countless depictions on a multitude of shirts worn by numerous Bay Area potheads. But, being a novice, going into this film I wasn't particularly interested in seeing a two and a half hour movie about the life and times Bob Marley. A story I thought I knew, and had heard, countless times before. But that notion changed rather abruptly within the first few minutes of this movie. And by the end, due to the brilliant investigative journalistic nature of MacDonald which elevates "Marley" from an average movie to a MUST SEE documentary, audiences who see this film will walk out with an in-depth appreciation for the man who wrote some of the most poetic and revolutionary lyrics in music history. "Marley" is the no holds barred dissection of a particular subject (or subject matter) which fans of great documentaries will crave (and in fact, was nowhere to be found in the films of 2011). And for a documentary that was originally supposed to be directed by Martin Scorsese, after seeing what MacDonald has accomplished here, it would be hard to imagine "Marley" being more perfectly executed in anybody else's hands. What truly sets "Marley" apart from other bio-documentaries and A&E specials is how, in a very PBS way, MacDonald uses a seemingly endless amount of archival footage, as well as interviews with almost everybody (still alive) who had anything to do with Marley's upbringing and his life as a world famous musician, as the narration. It was quite apparent that MacDonald had full access to any and all information he wanted, and as far as I could see, he thankfully took complete advantage of this fact. As audiences, we hear from Marley's family and peers about how as a young boy he was an outcast because of his mixed-race. We also hear from notable Jamaican artists and record executives, who saw his maturation into a musician that worked to bridge the gaps, not only in Jamaica (during times of war) but nationwide as well. In this way, MacDonald enables audiences to intimately know Bob Marley on every level (get your mind out of the gutter). But all the pure information aside, what MacDonald does very well here is not creating a documentary which totally sanctifies Bob Marley, much as many movies (tributes) do when celebrities with checkered pasts die. MacDonald captures recollections of Marley from both those who loved the man and those who thought him to be nothing more than a womanizing zealot, who was sadly not as politically motivated as he should have been. Final Thought: Overall "Marley" is a brilliant example of an archetype onto how all biographical documentaries should be made. Grade "A" filmmaking, in conjunction with a larger than life subject (subject matter) is what elevates "Marley" into one of the most entertaining two and a half hour documentaries I have ever seen. If you are at all a Bob Marley fan (casual or otherwise) and if you are able to, see "Marley", any way you can, before Hollywood makes a more commercialized (legacy ruining) feature film version of his life in a few years; starring Mekhi Phifer no doubt. Three-time cancer survivor from Methuen inspires others

Allison Hawkes, a three-time cancer survivor from Methuen, has become a source of inspiration for others.

Despite enduring more in her 18 years than most of other people of her age, the 18-year-old Methuen High School senior is an active athlete and co-chair of the city's Relay for Life Event.

Allison was just six-year-old when she was diagnosed with a stage four neuroblastoma tumor. She had to undergo a big operation to get her tumor and one of her kidneys removed.

Around three and a half years later doctors found more cancer cells in her body during a regular scan. At the age of 11, she had to undergo severe treatments once again.

Five years later, doctors again discovered a tiny cancer cells in her hip. She fought again and beat it.

Allison said she never lost hope during any of her three bouts with cancer.

She has been participating in Methuen's Relay for Life since her freshman year. Speaking on the topic, she says, "Once we got to relay it was so inspiring and the event itself was just so amazing and powerful and I wanted to go back and do it the next year."

Hawkes says she has plans to join Wheelock College in the fall where she will keep on involving herself in Relay for Life.

If money and credit are the lifeblood of the economy, then finance is its cardiovascular system. When that system fails, as it did following the collapse of Lehman Brothers last September, the results can be catastrophic.

Last week, The Wall Street Journal assembled roughly 100 of the brightest minds in finance to discuss not just how to restart the global financial system, but how to reconstruct it, so both the spectacular excesses and catastrophic failures of the past decade can be avoided.

The group included financiers such as George Soros and Blackstone Group co-founder Stephen Schwarzman, prominent academics such as Nobel Prize winners Myron Scholes and Robert Engle, and former government leaders including ex-Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin and ex-Fed chief Paul Volcker. Using a deliberative process devised by The Journal, the group debated dozens of principles on which a new financial system might be constructed, and in the end adopted 20 of them, which are published in this report.

Participants were encouraged to keep their focus on the Future of Finance, but the current crisis was impossible to avoid. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner spoke to the group on the same day that he unveiled his plan for a new Public-Private Investment Program to buy toxic assets from the banks. There was considerable skepticism among members of the group about whether that plan would work, but also an eagerness to suggest ways of improving its odds of success.

The group also was urged to consider the problem in all its global ramifications. Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who addressed the group on its opening night, and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who addressed many of the participants in New York after the close, both emphasized the importance of coming up with new institutions that can manage a world with multiple, interrelated financial centers.

The participants were challenged to set aside, as much as possible, their self-interest, and consider changes that were good for the financial system and society overall. But inevitably, self-interest reared its head. When the results of the deliberations were presented to Lawrence Summers, director of the White House National Economic Council, and to Prime Minister Brown, they were offered in that spirit: While they reflect the enormous knowledge and expertise of the participants, they also, to some degree, reflect their financial stakes as well.

One underlying theme of the discussions was that, in the end, Wall Street and Main Street are in this together. The people on Main Street can?t survive without a functioning finance system. And those on Wall Street can?t hope to prosper until they?ve repaired the social rift that has been graphically demonstrated by, among other things, the outburst of public anger over the bonuses paid to executives of AIG.

As several speakers pointed out, the world today faces not only a financial and economic crisis, but also a political and social crisis. To be successful, solutions must address all aspects.

Six leading outsourcing advisers have some interesting things to say about the current state of outsourcing, a good portion of them right in the Vested wheelhouse.

Wells Fargo Securities recently issued its forecast for the outsourcing industry based on a conference call with outsourcing analysts at Alsbridge, Deloitte, Everest, HfS Research, KPMG and PwC.

The basic thrust of the session, as highlighted by the International Association for Contract & Commercial Management on its website is that outsourcing is transitioning to ?more complex solutions and likely slower growth.?

The transformation occurring in the outsource arena?away from the simple ?lift and shift? approach to cost-arbitrage driven deals, for example?is helping to fuel that complexity. Lift and shift is diminishing as opportunities to save costs and improve efficiency ?now require clients to make more substantive process changes, especially for larger clients.

?This should require service providers to enhance knowledge of client?s end market, a theme that many of the leading providers have increasingly been discussing of late,? the Wells Fargo summary continues.

Brandon Busteed: In Education, Technology Changes Everything and Nothing

A technological revolution is happening in the world of education; it is changing schools for the better. But, it will never change the definition of and need for great teaching. That is what attendees of The Atlantic's second annual Technologies in Education forum learned and discussed Tuesday.

You would think that a room full of "who's who" technology experts, online and gaming companies, and futurists would "talk tech." We had that conversation to be sure. But the intriguing part was that the discussion kept returning to the basics of great classroom teaching. There was widespread agreement among the participants that technology will change everything and nothing. Essentially, what we do with technology has to have fundamental underpinnings in what the best teachers in the world have done for decades.

There is a lot of talk about the problems with education in America, and for good reason. Tom Kalil, Deputy Director for the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, noted that for all of the money spent on education, there have not been meaningful gains. As a country, we have been investing more money per student, while outcomes have been flat. Faced with access, completion, and cost challenges, we have turned to any potential solution. Many education policymakers hail technology, in particular, as the savior. According to Gallup research, however, public support for technology in education is still mixed at best:

? In the 2011 Phi Delta Kappa/Gallup Poll, we asked, "Would it be best for the school to hire a more effective teacher who was only available to teach over the Internet or would it be better to use a less effective teacher who could teach the class in person?" Fifty percent said "less effective teacher in person," while 46 percent said "more effective teacher online."
? In the 2011 Lumina Foundation/Gallup Poll, we asked people to react to the following statement: "Online colleges and universities offer high quality education." Ten percent strongly agreed and 10 percent strongly disagreed, while 76 percent gave more middle-of-the-road responses.

Gallup has spent decades studying great teaching and the innate talents of the best teachers. The fundamentals that make for a great classroom teacher are the same fundamentals that make for a great online course or gaming experience. Here is what the best teachers do:

They are relational: They develop student-to-student, student-to-educator, and student-to-parent relationships.

They are hopeful: They inspire students with energy and enthusiasm for the future.

They are insightful: They see each student as an individual and get to know his or her unique identity and nature.

Simply put, great teaching is about emotionally engaging the learner in a way that is individualized.

Our opportunity to innovate and improve education is deeply tied to these fundamentals. A great teacher is a great teacher -- whether she is real or avatar.

At the forum, Paula Kerger, president and CEO of PBS, talked about the enterprise's evolution from television to Web and remarked, "at the end of day, it is about telling a story," regardless of the medium. Sandra Calvert, director of the Children's Digital Media Center at Georgetown University, later added that the key question she always asks in her technology-based work is a classic one: "Who is the character?" (She referred to the fact that kids learn more from a known character such as Elmo than an unknown character.) Alexander Repenning, computer science professor at the University of Colorado, said that pedagogy matters most, not the technology. The future, in other words, is all about getting the fundamentals right.

The Atlantic forum highlighted that the debate about great technology vs. great teachers is unnecessary. Instead, the conversation needs to be about technology and teaching.

So now education leaders need to create a seamless interplay between teachers and technology. This will not be easy, but the forum attendees at least left with a clear sense of purpose. Calvert strongly supported the idea that great technology needs to come with great teachers noting, "online relationships form weaker bonds than in-person relationships." Joel Levin, a classroom teacher and expert in education gaming applications, noted that his value as a teacher comes from "drawing out the connections between gaming and real life for students. ... Without me there, it has much less meaning."

Implants and IUDs outperform the pill and other birth control options

Long-acting birth control devices are nearly 22 times as reliable as contraceptive pills or other short-acting approaches that need close monitoring, a new study shows. Since about half of all unplanned pregnancies are traceable to failed birth control, switching to a long-term, reversible contraceptive could prevent many accidental pregnancies, researchers say.

?As a doctor, if you had a drug for cancer or hypertension that was 20-fold better than the next drug, you would never write [a prescription] for that other drug,? says study coauthor Jeffrey Peipert, a physician and epidemiologist at Washington University in St. Louis. ?We hope that clinicians will re-think what is standard practice ? that a young woman comes in and gets pills or condom counseling. We have methods that are much, much better.?

The findings also hint that if cost were not an issue, most women given a choice of common hormone-based contraceptives would prefer the long-acting devices. About 77 percent of the women who volunteered for the new study chose an intrauterine device (IUD) or a small implant placed under the skin while only 20 percent requested shorter-acting options such as the pill, a vaginal ring or a skin patch. Fewer still opted for hormone injections called Depo-Provera. All costs were covered by the study. The findings appear in the May 24 New England Journal of Medicine.

?This study brought home how big a difference there is between effective methods and really effective methods? of contraception, and comes at a time when demand for birth control is growing, says Lawrence Finer, a demographer and public health researcher at the Guttmacher Institute and Columbia University in New York City. The point at which women are getting married and giving birth is getting later, he says. ?But the age at first sex hasn?t changed that much. You?ve got a long period where people need contraception.?

The researchers monitored 7,486 girls and women who were given the hormonal contraceptive of their choice. (The researchers didn?t offer barrier devices such as condoms or diaphragms.) During three years of follow-up, there were 156 unintended pregnancies that were attributable to some form of contraceptive failure. The pill/patch/ring group had failure rates that ranged from 4.8 percent after the first year to 9.4 percent after the third year, while the long-term devices and injections showed failure rates of less than 1 percent each year.

Teenagers have a lot to gain from long-acting devices, since their record of adhering to daily or on-the-spot birth control is inconsistent, says James Trussell, an economist and public health researcher at Princeton University. ?That?s the wonderful thing about these long-acting methods ? the implants and IUDs. There are no adherence problems. We call them ?fit and forget.??

But misconceptions about contraceptives? effectiveness remain, he says. ?Plenty of researchers have asked people open-ended questions about which contraceptive is more effective,? he says. ?A huge fraction get it wrong.?

Peipert says doubts about safety linger as well, in part due to the Dalkon Shield, an IUD from the 1970s that was linked to pelvic infections and pulled from shelves. IUDs no longer have this flaw, but the incident gave them a bad reputation, he says. ?Clinicians steered away from giving an IUD to young women or those who hadn?t yet had children. I don?t think that?s a worry anymore. These methods are very safe.?

NBC/WSJ poll: Obama, Romney locked in tight contest

Despite a volatile and eventful past few weeks in the early presidential contest, President Barack Obama continues to hold a small ? and slightly narrowing ? lead over Mitt Romney, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

But given the public?s pessimism about the economy and the direction of the country, Romney finds himself well within striking distance in an election that has the potential to be as close as the 2004 race between Republican George W. Bush and Democrat John Kerry.

?Obama?s chances for re-election ... are no better than 50-50,? says Democratic pollster Peter D. Hart, who conducted this survey with Republican Bill McInturff.

?So much has happened, and so little has changed,? Hart adds. ?And it tells you this is a dead-even race.?

NBC/WSJ poll: Obama's gay-marriage announcement a 'draw'

This poll ? which was taken after the anniversary of Osama bin Laden?s death, Obama?s announcement in support of gay marriage, fresh economic worries about Europe, and last month?s tepid jobs report ? shows the Democrat leading Romney by four points among registered voters, 47 percent to 43 percent.

In April, Obama?s edge in the survey was two points higher, 49 percent to 43 percent.

In the newest poll, Obama leads Romney among African Americans (88 percent to 2 percent), 18 to 34 year olds (55 percent to 35 percent), women (53 percent to 38 percent), independents (44 percent to 36 percent), and seniors (46 percent to 44 percent).

Romney, meanwhile, holds the advantage with whites (52 percent to 39 percent), men (49 percent to 40 percent), suburban residents (47 percent to 41 percent), Midwest residents (48 percent to 43 percent), and high-interest voters (47 percent to 44 percent).?

Down on the economy and nation?s direction
Yet attitudes about the economy and country?s direction appear to give Romney more than a puncher?s chance to make up his deficits against Obama.

Only 33 percent of respondents believe the economy will get better in the next year, which is down five points from April, and seven points from March. In addition, approval of Obama?s handling of the economy stands at 43 percent, down two points from last month.

?It feels a little tick worse? than it was earlier in the year, GOP pollster McInturff said about the economy.

What?s more, just a third of respondents think the nation is headed in the right direction, which is virtually unchanged from this year's previous NBC/WSJ polls (but remains significantly higher than late last year, after Washington?s debt-ceiling showdown).

And by a 48 to 45 percent margin, they think the U.S. is experiencing a long-term decline versus ordinarily tough times, while another 63 percent aren?t confident that life for their children will be better than it?s been for them.

Obama?s high marks ? and low ones
But Americans also give Obama high marks on key issues. By a 54 to 13 percent margin, they say his approach and policies have made the Iraq war better.

By a 48 to 18 percent margin, they say he?s improved the war in Afghanistan. And by 47 to 18 percent margin, they say he?s helped the U.S. auto industry.

But respondents give him negative marks on the budget deficit (47 percent say he?s made things worse), health care (43 percent), partisanship in politics (39 percent) the economy (37 percent) and the housing market (32 percent).

Politico's Roger Simon explains the impact of demographics on an election and whether it's more important than likability, and issues.

The president?s overall job-approval rating in the poll stands at 48 percent, which is virtually unchanged from April, and his foreign-policy handling is at 51 percent.

Advantages for Romney ? and doubts about him
The NBC/WSJ poll also shows that respondents believe that Romney?s business background is an asset that can be applied to several issues.

Nearly 60 percent say that business background can be a major or minor advantage for improving the country?s economic and job conditions, and nearly six in 10 say it could help to reduce the federal budget deficit.

Another 57 percent believe it could be an advantage in signing trade deals with foreign countries.

But doubts remain about Romney. While just 32 percent say they are either ?extremely? or ?quite? confident that Obama has the right policies and goals for the country, only 19 percent say the same about Romney.

And regarding Romney?s past work at the private-equity firm Bain Capital, the poll shows that 9 percent have a positive view of the firm and 19 percent have a negative view; 53 percent either weren?t sure or weren?t familiar with it.

In the last two weeks, the Obama campaign has pointed to examples where Bain ? under Romney?s leadership ? took over companies, saddled them with debt, laid off workers, all while making big profits for the investors.

A replay of 2004?
Given all of these different elements ? the president?s approval rating, attitudes about the country?s direction and economy, doubts about the challenger ? this presidential race looks very similar to the 2004 one between Bush and Kerry.

According to the May 2004 NBC/WSJ poll, Bush?s approval rating was 47 percent (Obama?s is 48 percent); just 33 percent thought the nation was headed in the right direction (33 percent say that now); and approval of Bush's handling of the economy was at 41 percent?(Obama?s is 43 percent).

And also in May 2004, Bush was leading Kerry by three points, 48 percent to 45 percent (Obama is now leading Romney by four points).

Hart, the Democratic pollster, sees this additional parallel to 2004: Both Democrats and Republicans will spend an enormous amount of money to influence a sliver of undecided voters.

Paraphrasing Winston Churchill, Hart says, ?Never will so much money be spent to persuade so few.?

The NBC/WSJ poll was conducted May 16-20 of 1,000 adults (250 reached by cell phone), and it has an overall margin of error of plus-minus 3.1 percentage points; among registered voters, the margin of error is plus-minus 3.4 percentage points.

CHICAGO (AP) ? World leaders weary of war will tackle Afghanistan's post-conflict future ? from funding for security forces to upcoming elections ? when the NATO summit opens Sunday.

President Barack Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai will huddle on the sidelines of the summit for an hour-long meeting. Their talks are expected to focus on planning for Afghanistan's 2014 elections, as well as the prospect of a political settlement with the Taliban, a senior Obama administration official said.

Karzai has said repeatedly he will step down from power when his term ends in 2014, paving the way for new elections. NATO's scheduled end of the war was built around those plans, with foreign forces staying until the 2014 election but exiting the country by 2015.

Obama and Karzai will discuss ways to ensure that political rivals can compete fairly in the run-up to the election, as well as ways to reduce fraud and support the winner who emerges, the official said.

Past Afghan elections were riddled with irregularities, and the U.S. applied heavy pressure to Karzai to schedule a second round of voting during the last presidential contest in 2009. The runoff was never held because Karzai's challenger pulled out in protest of what he claimed was an impossible level of corruption.

The election chapter opened a rift between the U.S. and Karzai, who suspected that the Obama administration wanted to replace him.

The Obama administration has mostly repaired its relationship with Karzai, but mistrust remains on both sides.

The U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive diplomacy, said Obama and Karzai also plan a lengthy discussion of prospects for a political settlement or peace pact between Karzai's government and the Taliban-led insurgency. The Taliban pulled out of U.S.-led talks in March, but separate talks among Afghan and other contacts continue, the U.S. official said.

The official said Obama would press his view that political reconciliation is essential to the country's future security.

The national security-focused NATO summit caps an extraordinary weekend of international summitry. Obama and the leaders of the world's leading industrial nations convened at Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland, for two days of talks focused in large part on Europe's economic crisis.

Both the G-8 and NATO summits were originally scheduled to be held in Chicago, but the White House abruptly announced this spring that the G-8 would be moved to Camp David. Officials said the move was aimed at facilitating a more intimate discussion among the leaders at the smaller summit.

Joining Obama and many of the G-8 leaders in Chicago are the heads of NATO alliance nations and other countries with a stake in the Afghan war.

Prominent among those nations is Pakistan. Tensions between the U.S. and Pakistan have been running high following several incidents, including the U.S. raid in Pakistan that led to the death of Osama bin Laden and a U.S. airstrike that killed two dozen Pakistani soldiers.

Both countries have been seeking to restore normal relations. Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari's acceptance of an invitation to attend the NATO summit was seen as an indication that his country would reopen key roads used to supply NATO fighting forces in Afghanistan, a key U.S. demand.

White House officials said that while they believe an agreement on reopening the supply routes will be reached, they do not expect that to happen during the NATO meetings.

Officials have indicated that Obama and Zardari will not hold a separate bilateral meeting until the matter is resolved.
