(AP) ? Former President George H.W. Bush was in a Houston hospital Thursday for continuing treatment of a lingering cough.

Bush, 88, has been in and out of the hospital recently for complications resulting from bronchitis, Methodist Hospital said in a brief statement.

The hospital and Bush's spokesman in Houston, Jim McGrath, described Bush as in stable condition and said they expected the former president to be released by the weekend. He's been under hospital care for nearly a week.

"If you asked him today, he would tell you he feels good enough to get out this afternoon," McGrath said Thursday. "But the doctors have a different view. He's 88, and they're being extra careful, and understandably so."

The former president's illness was described as not life-threatening.

"This was never a serious or life-threatening situation," said Dr. Amy Mynderse, an internal medicine specialist in charge of Bush's care. "We simply wanted to prevent the progression of the disease into pneumonia, which is possible in any patient at this age."

Bush was treated with antibiotics and steroids, she said in a statement issued by the hospital.

McGrath said this is Bush's second extended hospital stay this month.

"This cough has kind of been building on itself since roughly the beginning of the month," he said. "He was hospitalized earlier in the month for a little over a week. They thought they had successfully contained the bronchial issues but they hadn't.

"It kind of flared up again over Thanksgiving and the day after Thanksgiving, he was readmitted."

McGrath said physicians want the cough to go away completely before Bush is discharged.

"They don't want to put him through this again," McGrath said.

Bush's son, former President George W. Bush, and his wife, former first lady Laura Bush, slipped in to see him Sunday. They now live in Dallas.

The elder Bush was vice president under Ronald Reagan from 1980 to 1988, when he was elected president. He lost his re-election bid to Bill Clinton four years later.

Bush and his wife, Barbara, now make their winter home in Houston and spend summers in Kennebunkport, Maine.

Bush was seen a few weeks ago attending a Houston Texans NFL game, something he does frequently. He suffers a form of Parkinson's disease that has forced him to use a wheelchair or motorized scooter to get around.

The former president was a naval aviator in World War II ? at one point the youngest in the Navy ? and was shot down over the Pacific. He achieved notoriety in retirement for skydiving on at least three of his birthdays since leaving the White House in 1992.

Hafeez to bank on Saeed Ajmal in India ? Cricket News Update ...

Hafeez to bank on Saeed Ajmal in India ? Cricket News Update

Mohammad Hafeez, Pakistan?s T20 captain, has expressed that his side is geared up to take on India in the forthcoming limited-over series and believes that Saeed Ajmal is going to play a huge role in the crucial battle.

The two countries are going to play a bilateral series after a gap of almost five years, as their sporting relations were halted in the aftermath of the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008.

The Green Shirts will travel to the neighbouring country in December for a limited-over series which includes three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and a couple of T20 Internationals.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni and company are always considered to be a formidable unit at home and will start as favourites against the Men in Green.

Hafeez however, is optimistic about his side?s chances on the tour and said that the boys are eager to deliver the goods against the arch-rivals. The cricketer from Sargodha feels that Ajmal, one of the world?s premier spinners, will be Pakistan?s key weapon in the competition.

?Our team is balanced and morale is high. We aim to win the series against India,? said the country?s T20 captain. ?Saeed Ajmal is our main wicket-taker. We have high expectations from him and he has been delivering.?

The all-rounder, who has been representing Faisalabad Wolves in Pakistan?s domestic cricket over the years, is all set to play for Lahore Lions in the upcoming T20 tournament, which begins from December 1, 2012, at Lahore. The Lions include a number of other international stars, led by the legendary Pakistan batsman, Mohammad Yousuf.

While commenting about Shahid Afridi?s poor run of form in recent times, the T20 captain said that Boom Boom has been a genuine match-winner for the country over the years and he will return to form very soon. Hafeez further claimed that there is no grouping within the national team.

?Shahid Afridi is a very experienced player and his dip in form in temporary. There is no rift in the team, all rumours regarding it are false. Misbah & I are good friends & discuss the team's performance now & then,? he added.

GLHFCasting ? auto insurance-Sandwich

auto insurance Sandwich IL There are more cars on the road each year. As this number increases, the possibility of accidents also increases. The difference between a little aggravation and major pain can be car insurance. How can you decide what insurance you require and how you can buy it? Coverage requirements will differ by state/province, but usually include the following: Liability: This kind of insurance can pay for the damage that you have caused. These damages might include bodily injury, and property damage. Bodily injury damages can include medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Property damage can refer to car repair costs and loss of property use. It also covers your defense and court costs if you are sued. State laws usually require standard amounts of liability insurance, but larger amounts are available and usually recommended. Personal Injury Protection: Personal injury protection pays for all medical treatment for you or other people in your car, no matter who was responsible for the collision. It is occasionally referred to as no-fault coverage. The minimum amount of this insurance is typically set by local government. Medical Payments: Medical payment coverage is available in states that are not considered no-fault; it pays regardless of who carries responsibility for an accident. This insurance will pay for an insured person?s necessary medical or funeral expenses for bodily injury from an accident. Collision: Damages resulting from a car accident will be paid for under this kind of insurance. Comprehensive: This kind of insurance takes care of all damages not caused by a collision. This may include flood damage, vandalism, and theft. Uninsured Motorist: If you are hit by an uninsured driver, this type of insurance will make sure you are covered. Under-Insured Motorist: There are other drivers who have liability insurance that can?t pay for all the expenses they are responsible for. Under-insured motorist coverage protects you from those drivers. Other types of car insurance, like emergency road service, can also be purchased. What you pay for car insurance varies by company and will depend on multiple factors, including: * Which policies you choose * The make and model of the car you drive * Your driving record * Your age, gender and marital status * Where you live Some have come to think of car insurance as a necessary evil, but it is something you will need if you are ever in an accident. Evaluate your needs, do your research , and with the guidance of your insurance agency, choose the option that fits you best.

Real Estate Market Turning Around In Many Denver Neighborhoods ...

Green Valley Ranch homeowner Alex Lara tells CBS4?s Tom Mustin she?s glad her neighborhood has moved from a buyer?s market to a seller?s market. (credit: CBS)

DENVER (CBS4) ? A few years ago Denver?s Green Valley Ranch neighborhood was listed as having one of the highest foreclosure rates in the country. Things have changed dramatically since then.

The far Northeast Denver neighborhood has gone through some major infrastructure improvements, and in the past four years home sales have tripled.

Similar success stories are unfolding in many other Denver metro area neighborhoods. Home prices across the Denver region are at a five year high. CBS4 partner the Denver Business Journal reports home prices have been trending upward for nine straight months. In September home sales were up 6.7 percent when compared to sales in September 2011.

Commerce City, Arvada, Broomfield and Highlands Ranch are some of the other areas where the turnaround is being tangibly felt.

?Foreclosures are down considerably. We?re getting bidding wars on the homes in the resale market out here,? Oakwood Homes spokeswoman Alisa Poncher told CBS4?s Tom Mustin in Green Valley Ranch.

CBS4 interviewed Green Valley Ranch homeowners in 2008, when the Great Recession was in effect and the housing market was at rock bottom.

?There are six houses just right around me that are in foreclosure,? said one resident at the time.

Now there are new schools, parks and a bustling housing market.

So what spurred the change? Poncher says Green Valley exemplifies a growing confidence in Colorado.

?Consumer confidence is improving and unemployment numbers have gone down,? Poncher said. ?We?re still seeing an influx of people from other states move here, and interest rates are at an all-time low.?

That?s great news for homeowners like Alex Lara. She and her husband bought a home in the neighborhood seven years ago. Two years later they received a disturbing letter from the bank.

?They basically told us we were under water $50,000,? Lara said.

Lara says she and her husband thought seriously about giving up their home, but they decided to stick it out for their children. Now they are glad they did.

?Now that the value is going up, we?re happy and we look forward to the next years,? she said.

gulftoday.ae | EU agrees on significant debt relief deal for Greece

BRUSSELS: Greece won breathing space on Tuesday with long-frozen eurozone loans to restart from December and a first clear admission that a chunk of the country's debt burden will need to be written off down the line.

After 13 hours of talks in Brussels, the eurozone and the International Monetary Fund agreed to unlock 43.7 billion euros ($56 billion) in loans and on the need to grant significant debt relief for decades to come.

Greece must still meet a series of agreed conditions but "the decision will certainly reduce the uncertainty and strengthen confidence in Europe and in Greece," said European Central Bank President Mario Draghi who left the talks before a final press conference.

Starved of bailout financing since the summer, Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras hailed the deal in Athens, while German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said the package would be presented to German lawmakers by the end of the week.

Other member states will also have to obtain their parliament's approval for the deal.

"Everything has gone well," Samaras told reporters in Athens.

"All Greeks have fought (for this decision) and tomorrow is a new day for every Greek person," he added.

Finance ministers, the IMF and the ECB said the money would be paid in four installments from Dec.13 through until the end of March, conditional on Greece funnelling income back to creditors at source and on the implementation by Athens of tax reforms settled with creditors.

The initial market response was upbeat.

On currency markets the euro was stronger in Asian trade as investors breathed a sigh of relief over the deal for Greece.

The 17-nation currency bought $1.2980 and 106.46 yen in Tokyo morning trade after briefly topping $1.30 for the first time in about a month.
That was up from $1.2971 and 106.38 yen in New York trade late on Monday.

Asian stock markets also enjoyed the news in early trading, with Tokyo shares rising 0.38 per cent by the break, Hong Kong up 0.25 per cent and Sydney gaining 0.68 per cent.

The results of the "labourious" negotiations according to IMF head Christine Lagarde are intended to see Greece's debt-to-GDP ratio fall from an estimated 144 percent to 124 per cent come 2020, and "substantially below 110 per cent" of gross domestic product by 2022.

"The IMF wanted to make sure the euro partners would take the necessary actions to bring Greece's debt on a sustainable path," said Lagarde.

"I can say today that it has been achieved."

There will be a mixture of techniques used to bring down Greece's debt burden.

These will begin with a buyback by Greece of old debt that has fallen in value on commercial money markets as well as national central banks across the eurozone foregoing profits on holdings of Greek debt whose worth has slumped.

2013 Best Resale Value Award Winners Announced By Kelley Blue ...

KBB.com Offers Advice on Choosing New Cars Predicted to Maintain Value over Five-Year Ownership Period

IRVINE, Calif. (Nov. 26, 2012) ? The 2013 model-year vehicle winners of the annual Best Resale Value Awards, recognizing current and forthcoming vehicles for their projected retained value throughout the initial five-year ownership period, were announced today by Kelley Blue Book, www.kbb.com, the leading provider of new and used car information.? Since depreciation (or loss of value) is typically a car buyer?s primary expense during ownership, these awards, like all of KBB.com?s new and used vehicle information, are designed to help consumers make more informed car-buying decisions.

Kelley Blue Book?s Best Resale Value Awards are based on projections from the Kelley Blue Book? Official Residual Value Guide, determined by a skilled staff of automotive analysts.? These prestigious awards honor vehicles expected to maintain the greatest proportion of their original Manufacturer?s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) after five years of ownership.? Low-volume vehicles and vehicles with a MSRP of more than $60,000 are excluded from award consideration, except in the luxury and high-performance categories.

?

(Residual values used for award calculations are based on the November/December 2012 Kelley Blue Book? Residual Value Guide.? Top 10 models appear in alphabetical order).

While most car buyers today consider sticker price one of the most significant numbers when choosing a new vehicle, the editors at Kelley Blue Book?s KBB.com recommend that shoppers consider a number they won?t find on any window sticker: the resale value.? Depreciation often is the greatest expense incurred by drivers during the first five years of vehicle ownership.? An average 2013 model-year vehicle only will retain about 38.6 percent of its original value after a five-year ownership period, meaning that a $50,000 new car today will only be worth somewhere close to $19,300 after five years.? Vehicles with average or below-average resale values are generally plentiful in the marketplace and easy to find.? But certain vehicles are projected to hold their value better than others.? While much of a vehicle?s resale value is based on supply and demand, as well as current and projected future market conditions, vehicles that retain their value best are rarely discounted and tend to generate high levels of consumer interest.

?The competition for Best Resale Value within many segments has become very heated in the last few years, as major vehicle redesigns and new model introductions have challenged the traditional favorites,? said Eric Ibara, director of residual consulting for Kelley Blue Book.? ?However, for the second year in a row, Toyota and Lexus retain the top Best Resale Value ranking for both non-luxury and luxury brands, based on the average 60-month residual value across all models in each brands? respective lineup.? Combined, there is an impressive total of 12 Toyota and Lexus models bringing home 2013 Kelley Blue Book Best Resale Value Awards this year; half of the Top 10 models with Best Resale Value for 2013 hail from either Toyota or Lexus.?

Vehicle shoppers should take several factors into consideration when buying a new car to ensure as much future value as possible.? Just because a car is expensive or from a luxury brand does not necessarily mean it will hold its value better than an inexpensive car down the road.? In fact, because resale values are calculated as a percent of original MSRP, an expensive vehicle has to command a relatively high price later as a used car to maintain its residual value.? For example, a $60,000 vehicle has to be worth $21,000 five years later to have a residual value of 35 percent.? At this price point, not only will it compete with other used luxury vehicles, but it also will compete with some new vehicles in the marketplace. ?Meanwhile, an $18,000 new vehicle only needs to be worth $6,300 five years later to have the same 35 percent residual value, and at that price point it will not compete with new vehicles.

?Getting the most for your money means knowing what your car will be worth when you sell it, not just what it?s worth when you buy it,? said Jack Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book?s KBB.com.? ?Vehicle depreciation is a new-car buyer?s biggest expense, yet many shoppers don?t realize that resale value information is available for free on Kelley Blue Book?s KBB.com.? Taking the time to research and wisely choose vehicle makes, models and options now can help new-car shoppers get as much money as possible when they sell or trade-in the vehicle in the future.?

In addition, most options and packages added to a vehicle do not necessarily increase its resale value.? However, there are exceptions?to the rule, such as a high-performance engine or a performance package in a sports car.? Finally, regional preferences can significantly impact the value of a vehicle.? In the colder sections of the country, a two-wheel drive vehicle?s resale value will not be as high as a four-wheel or all-wheel drive option of that same model.? At the other end of the thermometer, in warmer climates black (or dark-colored) cars will not have as high resale value as they could command in other regions.

While the company?s Residual Value Guide has been published since 1982, Kelley Blue Book established its annual Best Resale Value Awards in 2003.? Kelley Blue Book reports projections based on current vehicle data, relevant auction transactions, sales data, market conditions for each vehicle, competition within vehicle segments, expectations of the future economy and the combined experience of Kelley Blue Book?s residual analysts.? Residual values reflect projected future auction values for vehicles in average condition with 75,000 miles at the end of a five-year lease or ownership period.? Kelley Blue Book?s residual values are used by manufacturers, banks, financial institutions, and the automotive leasing industry.

For more information about Kelley Blue Book?s Best Resale Value Awards, please visit http://www.kbb.com/new-cars/best-resale-value-awards-2013/.

James Marshall Crotty: The Aria Resort in Las Vegas Is a Five-Star Rip-Off

2012-11-26-512pxAria_CityCenter_Front.jpg

Do not stay at the Aria Resort and Casino. It's a rip-off. Now, why would this seasoned travel writer say such a nasty thing?

First, there's the Aria front desk. It's modern and colorful in a 1990s Spago way. However, as with any deceptively labeled 5-star loser hotel front desk, once there, you learn that there all sorts of hidden fees you were never overtly, let alone covertly, told about when you booked a room online. For example, there's the $25 "Aria resort fee." Essentially this covers wireless and use of pool and gym. In a genuine customer-friendly world, this fee should be part of the price you paid upfront.

Then there's the tax that comes with the resort fee. Then, after this hijacking, you learn that Aria pool hours end at 5PM. And workout room hours end at 8PM. Super 8 has 24-7 workout hours, why can't a putative five-star esort?

Clearly, the greedy, declasse folks at MGM Resorts International -- which owns Las Vegas' 67-acre, LEED-certified, financially troubled CityCenter resort (of which the Aria is the star attraction) as well as the gauche CircusCircus -- want you spending at the atrociously designed and half-empty Crystals shopping mall next door, not having a fit and relaxing "resort experience."

And, sure enough, if -- like a normal traveler on vacation -- you want a sauna or steam, there's an additional spa "facility fee" of $30 (I won't even detail the outrageous fees charged for pedicures and other Spa services). And let's not forget the $20 fee to have a stupid little mini-fridge brought up to your room, the egregiously overpriced vittles in one's room (stocked by a staffer who's clearly never set foot in a Whole Foods to discover what gourmet, yet health-conscious, 5-star-hotel visitors actually consume today), and the lack of a coffee-maker or even mugs to pour hot tap water into. The shysters who run the Aria take parsimony to a whole new level of pure obsequious evil.

Yet, there's still more. On my particular visit on Saturday and Sunday night of Thanksgiving weekend, the Aria had closed its buffett for what my Filipino front desk person said were "repairs." Repairs of a freakin' buffet? The buffet experience is half the reason one comes to Vegas and endures the slots and other cheesy mayhem. In addition, the hot water was down in my room. And I had to endure cleaning folks loudly yacking away next door and down the hall, even though I was promised to be put in the quietest part of the hotel. You would think that at a five-star hotel the management would tell the staff to shut the Fricke up!

Maybe one would want to sample Aria's high-priced Diamond Award winning restaurants, such as Sage, or barMasa from Michelin three-star chef Takayama, if one wasn't so financially violated in other aspects of the hotel experience. Here's the thing that hotel chains NEVER EVER seem to get: when you are not transparent about costs upfront and through all the booking agencies you deploy, and when you pile on additional fees for every aspect of the hotel experience, you PISS THE GUEST OFF. The idea, corporate drones, is to subtlely fleece them at the roulette table - a requisite fleecing that John Q. Dumbass accepts as part and parcel of the Vegas experience -- not the moment the mark walks through the gilded door.

But, hey, the view from my uber hi-tech 25th floor "corner room" was expansive, parking was free, and the waterfall sculpture at the Aria entrance was a trippy visual thrill. Though, MGM, if you want to showcase your "world-class" art collection, think beyond the now clich? works of Stella, Holzer, and Oldenburg (even if the hoi polloi are suckers for Claus' pop art giganticism).

Of course, for a hotel that is so transparently superficial in execution, it comes as no surprise that the hotel's staff has the trite fake "upscale" hotel chain etiquette down pat. The half-human operators robotically say, "my pleasure" with every request, however mundane.

"Will you please fix the bleepin' water in my room?!"
"My pleasure, Mr. Crotty."
"Will you please tell the cleaning staff to stop screeching with laughter?"
"My pleasure, Mr. Crotty."
"Will you please have someone bring up a simple ugly mug, so I can have my morning tea?"
"My pleasure, Mr. Crotty."

Aria's President, William McBeath, writes in the handy leather binder one finds in one's room, "We developed Aria" (McBeath writes Aria in screaming all caps, but I won't follow suit) "with one goal in mind--to create the most significant resort experience in the world. As the heart of CityCenter, Aria offers the world's best dining, retail and entertainment in a truly unique setting." The guy has to be kidding, right?

Lesson: you get what you pay for in America, especially in Vegas, which specializes in new and innovative ways to screw you ten ways to Pahrump.

Do not stay at the Aria. Unless you are a glutton for five-star punishment.

Now, let's hear below from the saccharine well-paid shills that stack the reviews on Trip Advisor and other so-called "truth in travel" websites.

Carissa Henry: Divorce: The Darkness Before The Dawn

Our relationship had become weathered and worn by time, until that last little bit of goodness between us had eroded away as though it were a natural part of life. So after much reflection and consideration, we decided to end our marriage.

Because we agreed to remain amicable and on good terms for our two children, I assumed that this divorce would be easier than the messy divorces we witnessed over the years. We vowed to work together to be good co-parents and still collaborate on all things involving the children -- just from two different households. We planned to set a new precedent for divorce and do it in a way that few have done it before, defying the odds and modeling a noteworthy example. Essentially, I thought I had it all figured out, and in the recesses of my mind, I had painted a landscape of ease and civility. I was going to master divorce in the same way I mastered college-level British Literature, with a zealous A+.

But I was not prepared for what happened in the months that followed. I had no idea how much it would hurt when the wave of sadness and reality finally came crashing down on me. Out of nowhere, I unexpectedly found myself lost, grief-stricken, and emotionally struggling to stay afloat. I thought I was mentally equipped and ready for this divorce, yet I was suddenly falling apart. There were a few things I wish I'd known about divorce before I faced it and a few things I've learned thus far:

There is no such thing as an easy divorce.

My father told me this, but I didn't really believe him at the time. No matter how well you get along with your ex, the ending of any relationship is painful and confusing, even more so if children are involved. If you share children with your ex, he or she will always be a part of your life -- like it or not. The fact that the dynamic of your relationship has changed is unsettling and strange, and remnants of regret still linger. Even when a divorce isn't volatile, it still hurts, but it's a quiet, deep ache. The days on which my children are away from me are the darkest, loneliest times in my life. The sound of their liveliness is replaced by silence and emptiness, and I'm not sure I'll ever grow accustomed to their momentary absences. Being cordial with an ex-spouse is beneficial for the well-being of children, but unfortunately, it doesn't make divorce a painless experience.

You don't just divorce your spouse; you also divorce your life.

I didn't realize how much of my identity was associated with being married, nor did I realize that I would suddenly feel like a stranger in my own life. Most of us are dedicated creatures of habit and the drastic change that divorce brings to our lives is shocking and disconcerting. Friendships change. Holidays change. Paperwork changes. Everything changes. Amidst my naivety, I was oblivious and unprepared for how different I would feel, how utterly uncomfortable in my own skin I would become. Order and routine were replaced by uncertainty and chaos, and I felt lost without the habits and rituals we had established as a family over the years.

Self-doubt and self-blame are vicious.

Self-doubt and self-blame are like the plague, but instead of wreaking havoc on one's body, they infect one's soul. After the divorce, I had no idea how intensely my mind would scrutinize almost everything I've ever done or thought, every move I've ever made to get to this point in my life. My mind became a combat zone in which I fought brutal battles against myself, flashing back to happier times, and then forward to more difficult times when we were falling apart, wondering what I should have done differently. I blamed and doubted myself to such a degree that I quickly depleted what little self-love I had. I never imagined that I would need to arm myself against the critical, relentless voice that lived inside my head. I needed constant reminding that I was not solely responsible for this divorce and that my children deserved two happy parents, even if they were happy separately.

The sadness will come.

No matter how tough and guarded you are, sadness and regret will eventually catch up with you. When you planned on spending the rest of your life with someone and had hopes, dreams, and a multitude of memories together -- and then it all ends -- it's sad. Even if the decision to divorce is the right one, there is still a huge sense of loss, and the most common reaction to loss is sadness. Some days, it can be overwhelming. I wish someone had told me, "Go ahead and give yourself permission to cry. Sadness is like a virus: it has to run its course and work its way out of your system."

It took me accidentally stumbling across an article outlining the stages of grief to realize that I had been experiencing them: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and then acceptance. It was like an epiphany for me, a powerful moment of enlightenment in which my feelings were suddenly validated and my emotions made sense. I didn't know beforehand that divorce would almost feel like a death in the family, nor was I aware of the emotional impact that even a civil divorce would have on me. People told me that it would be "hard", but no one informed me of the immense grief that would afflict my soul, grief that would unassumingly latch onto me in stages. I muddled through those stages for months until one day, I realized that I hurt less than the day before, and I slowly began to heal.

People leave marriages because they are ultimately unhappy or unfulfilled, so instead of continuing on a path of unhappiness, they choose to go in another direction. Even if divorce is the right choice and you embark upon it with a positive attitude, that doesn't necessarily mean that it will be easy and that you won't experience some degree of suffering. Those experiencing the aftermath of a divorce must realize that the road does get easier. The burden you carry does get lighter, or else it just becomes less difficult to bear because in time, you become stronger. In the midst of sorrow, you have to believe that brighter days are ahead, even though you can't envision them yet. Life will get better, but it's likely to get worse first. After all, some of the darkest hours of the night are right before the dawn.

Washington State Football: Cougars Win Apple Cup, Stun Washington 31-28 In OT

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Andrew Furney kicked a 27-yard field goal on Washington State's first possession of overtime, and the Cougars overcame an 18-point deficit in the fourth quarter to stun rival Washington 31-28 in the Apple Cup on Friday, snapping an eight-game losing streak.

Washington quarterback Keith Price threw an interception on the first play of overtime that defensive lineman Kalafitoni Pole nearly returned for a game-ending touchdown, but he was caught at the 5.

The Cougars (3-9, 1-8 Pac-12) took possession and, after picking up a first down, Furney kicked a 27-yard field goal, leading to a crush of crimson and gray fans storming and celebrating at midfield.

Washington (7-5, 5-4) had a chance to win on the final play of regulation, but Travis Coons' 35-yard field goal attempt at the same end of the stadium was wide right after a bad snap.

In a rivalry known for unpredictability, the 2012 version will rank among the tops in Apple Cup lore. Washington led 28-10 after Bishop Sankey's second touchdown run late in the third quarter, but the Huskies wilted under a siege of self-inflicted mistakes with turnovers and penalties coming back in favor of the Cougars.

Carl Winston ran for three touchdowns for Washington State, matching the Cougars entire season total of touchdowns rushing entering Friday's game. His third TD with 7:26 left, combined with Jeff Tuel's 2-point conversion pass to Brett Bartolone pulled the Cougars within 28-25.

Washington was then forced to punt with 5:25 left after Price was forced to throw it away on third down. Tuel hit Gino Simone for 18 yards, his first catch of the game, to get into Washington territory and later a 9-yard reception to get inside the Huskies 30. The Cougars stalled after missing on third-and-1, but Furney connected on a 45-yard field goal to pull the Cougars even at 28-28 with 1:59 left.

Washington started at its 25 with all three timeouts. Price scrambled for a 7-yard run, and the Huskies were aided by a 15-yard personal foul call against Casey Locker moving the ball to the 47. Price hit Austin Seferian-Jenkins for 7 yards into Cougars' territory and found DiAndre Campbell for consecutive 11-yard throws to get to the Washington State 24 with 59 seconds left.

Sankey then carried twice to the 15, forcing Washington State to use its final timeout with 47 seconds left and the Huskies facing a third-and-1. Washington's school record-tying 18th penalty backed them up, and Sankey came up short on third down.

Washington coach Steve Sarkisian ran the clock down to 5 seconds before calling timeout. Coons was 3 of 4 inside 40 yards this year, but the snap back to holder Cody Bruns was low and the timing was off.

Washington State elected to go on defense first in overtime. Price was pressured by Logan Mayes on the first play of the extra session and he tried to throw for Sankey, but the pass landed in the arms of Pole. The big defensive lineman tried to end the game with the interception return, but was caught at the 5 by Bruns.

Because Pole didn't score, Washington State took possession at the 25 and on third-and-4, Tuel found Bartolone for 10 yards to the 9 and Mike Leach decided to end it there. Furney lined up and the kick was true, giving the Cougars their first win over their rivals since 2008.

Tuel finished 33 of 53 for 350 yards and two interceptions. The Cougars made plenty of mistakes, especially during Washington's 21-point third quarter, but showed resolve in the fourth quarter that was absent for most of Leach's miserable first season as coach at Washington State.

Price was 20 of 34 for 194 yards and two touchdowns, but also committed two costly turnovers. He had a fumble in the fourth quarter that led to Winston's third TD run. Sankey rushed 84 yards, seeing his streak of 100-yard rushing games snapped at three, but had two touchdowns bringing his season total to 15.

Washington saw its four-game win streak snapped and failed in its shot at its first 8-win season since 2001.

Banks offer loans, credit limit hikes to Sandy ... - Personal Finance

Multiple card issuers are offering victims of Superstorm Sandy credit line increases.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) ? In the wake of Superstorm Sandy, banks are offering short-term loans and emergency credit limit increases to many East coast residents. But before jumping on one of these offers, make sure you know what you?re getting into.

Citi (C, Fortune 500), Wells Fargo (WFC, Fortune 500), Bank of America (BAC, Fortune 500), Chase (JPM, Fortune 500) and American Express (AXP, Fortune 500) have been sending out e-mails and posting alerts on their websites, notifying credit card customers that they may qualify for special credit offers if they were impacted by the storm. And in certain cases, banks are being a little more lenient with their lending standards.

Citi is offering emergency credit line increases to its customers. If a Citi customer isn?t initially approved under the standard screening process, the bank will re-evaluate their account history to take into consideration ?storm-related consequences that may be out of the customer?s control,? a Citi spokeswoman said. And it will become the customer?s new credit limit going forward.

Bank of America customers will need to be creditworthy to qualify for a credit line hike, but each case will be determined on an individual basis, taking into consideration the storm?s impact. The new limit will also become permanent.

Related: More banks waiving fees in wake of Sandy

Meanwhile, Chase said some customers in affected areas can get credit line extensions even if they wouldn?t normally qualify, but the limit would revert to its previous level once they recovered from the storm.

Taking advantage of a credit limit increase isn?t a bad idea as long as you have a low interest rate and no cheaper options, said Odysseas Papadimitriou, CEO of credit card comparison site CardHub.com. But if your rate is high, the interest can really pile up. Instead, it may make better sense to apply for a new card with a promotional offer like a 0% interest rate for a certain period of time ? which are common heading into the holidays.

In addition to credit line increases, Wells Fargo is offering short-term loans to its customers. Its Direct Deposit Advance is advertised as a way to cover emergency expenses and costs $7.50 for every $100 borrowed.

Related: Superstorm Sandy donations top $11 million

However, short-term loans are rarely a good idea, said Papadimitriou. Likened to ?payday loans? by consumer groups, they carry steep fees that borrowers often can?t afford to pay back by the time the loan is due ? a date that typically coincides with their next paycheck.

When calculated over the average term of 10 days, APRs on these short-term loans typically run in the triple digits. The fee on Wells Fargo?s advance is lower than most, but its APR would still amount to a high 270% for a 10-day loan period.

?Even [getting a credit limit increase on] the highest credit card APR out there ? in the 40% or 50% range ? is going to be more attractive than a payday-type loan,? said CardRatings.com founder Curtis Arnold.

While both options may sound tempting if your house or car has just been flooded and you can barely pay the bills, remember to check with your insurance company to figure out what is covered first. And, of course, tap into any funds available from national or state disaster relief agencies, said Papadimitriou.

Related: Filing insurance claims after Sandy ? What to expect

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (known as FEMA), for example, will often cover rental payments for temporary housing when a storm victim?s home isn?t available. Grants are also available for home repairs and to replace household items that were destroyed. Other disaster-related expenses like medical, dental, funeral or transportation services, may also be covered by FEMA. To apply for assistance, go to DisasterAssistance.gov. You can apply by smartphone at m.fema.gov or call 1-800-621-3362.

Meanwhile, the Small Business Administration offers disaster loans of up to $200,000 with interest rates as low as 1.7% to homeowners needing to repair or replace homes damaged or destroyed by the storm. Loans up to $40,000 are available for homeowners or renters to repair or replace personal property that was damaged.

Many nonprofits ? like the American Red Cross ? are also offering free assistance to storm victims, including meals, shelter, and transportation. Banks offer loans, credit limit hikes to Sandy victims

Five retractions for cancer research team for manipulated figures ...

The International Journal of Cancer, a Wiley title, has retracted a pair of articles from a group at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, for image manipulation.

The papers, from the lab of Adi Gazdar, the W. Ray Wallace Distinguished Chair in Molecular Oncology Research who is known for his massive collection of human cancer cells, were published in 2005.

The first was titled ?Aberrant methylation of Reprimo in human malignancies.? According to the retraction notice:

The following article from International Journal of Cancer, ?Aberrant Methylation of Reprimo in Human Malignancies? by Takao Takahashi, Makoto Suzuki, Hisayuki Shigematsu, Narayan Shivapurkar, Chinyere Echebiri, Masaharu Nomura, Victor Stastny, Meena Augustus, Chew-Wun Wu, Ignacio I. Wistuba, Stephen J. Meltzer, and Adi F. Gazdar, published online on 7 February 2005 in Wiley Online Library (wileyonlinelibrary.com), has been retracted by agreement between the authors, the journal Editor in Chief, Professor Peter Lichter and John Wiley & Sons Ltd. The retraction has been agreed due to presentation of an improperly manipulated figure (Figure 1A, page 506) in the article.

The work has been cited 41 times, according to Thomson Scientific?s Web of Knowledge. It also caught the attention of Science News, which wrote a story about the findings.

The second article, which appeared about six months later, was titled ?Aberrant promoter methylation of multiple genes during multistep pathogenesis of colorectal cancers.? Again:

The following article from International Journal of Cancer ?Aberrant promoter methylation of multiple genes during multistep pathogenesis of colorectal cancers? by Takao Takahashi, Hisayuki Shigematsu, Narayan Shivapurkar, Jyotsna Reddy, Yingye Zheng, Ziding Feng, Makoto Suzuki, Masaharu Nomura, Meena Augustus, Jing Yin, Stephen J. Meltzer and Adi F. Gazdar, published online in February 2006 in Wiley Online Library (wileyonlinelibrary.com), has been retracted by agreement between the authors, the journal Editor in Chief, Professor Peter Lichter and John Wiley & Sons Ltd. The retraction has been agreed due to manipulation of Figure 1A and Figure 2A (page 926).

The paper has been cited 23 times.

We?ve asked Gazdar for comment, and will update with anything we learn.

Update, 3:30 p.m. Eastern, 11/23/12: We spoke with Gazdar, who filled in some blanks for us. He said the papers came to the attention of UT officials when a figure turned up in the work of a Spanish investigator named?Jos? Rom?n-G?mez, whom we covered back in April (see this comment from ?amw? putting some pieces together). According to Gazdar, investigators identified problems with the plagiarized image ? problems they dismissed as inconsequential but which prompted him to conduct his own inquiry.

Gazdar said he eventually reviewed nearly 20 papers, identifying five that had suspect images.?Takao Takahashi ? the first author on the two retracted articles listed above, who now works in Japan ? acknowledged manipulating images in four of the articles, Gazdar said, but denied doing so in a fifth. Another former post-doc ?accepted responsibility? for the last paper, Gazdar said, but did not acknowledge wrongdoing.

In addition to the two retractions in the International Journal of Cancer, a third paper by Takahashi has been retracted, from Anticancer Research. The notice is behind a paywall ? tsk,?tsk. Here it is:

The article entitled: ?Aberrant methylation to heparan sulfate glucosamine 3-O-sulfotransferase 2 genes as a biomarker in colorectal cancer? by Tokuyama Y, Takahashi T, Okumura N, Nonaka K, Kawaguchi Y, Yamaguchi K, Osada S, Gazdar A and Yoshida K, published in Anticancer Research, 2010, 30(12): pp. 4811-4818 is retracted.

This action, requested by the authors, is based on the findings and recommendations of an Internal Review Committee at the University of Texas Southwestern, Dallas, TX, USA, as the GAPDH loading control in Figure 1A of the article (p.4813) appears to be a modified version of a figure previously published elsewhere.

Gazdar said he has requested the retraction of two more articles, including this one from the British Journal of Cancer and one, which we?re not sure about, from Clinical Cancer Research.

Gazdar ? who by all accounts is going above and beyond what many in his position might have ? said he reported the image problems to the Office of Research Integrity ?months ago? but has not heard anything about an investigation. The agency?would neither confirm nor deny an inquiry when we asked about it today.

We?ve updated the headline of this post to reflect all five retractions.

Life can hit you by surprise sometimes. It?s possible to be unemployed after holding a job for years, and you suddenly don?t know what to do. Consider creating a online business as a viable solution to getting your life back on track. The advice in this article can be a springboard to getting you started.

Being the sole proprietor of a home business enterprise includes being the sole financial officer of your business. If you allow another person to use your business credit card to make a personal purchase, you may be unable to write off other business-related purchases on your taxes that show up on the same receipt.

Research anyone you plan to hire for your home business enterprise. Your employees should be dependable and they should know what they are talking about.

TIP! It might seem like a vacation being able to send correspondence from home, but eventually you may come to miss interacting with others on a daily basis. Be sure you go out and have fun from time to time.

Give your work from home business website the ability to sell. You increase your profits by offering your products or services online as well as at the site of your business. Many online providers allow you to register domain names at affordable rates.

When starting a home business enterprise, avoid taking out a loan. Is the chance worth taking if it means jeopardizing your relationship? Is it wise to use your home as collateral on a bank loan?

Set aside an area in your residence that serves as your work area. Always make sure that you arrange your house in a way that is organized and provides you with enough space for the materials you need. Doing this will ensure that your business stays organized, and organization in a business that is based from home is extremely important.

TIP! Removable storage devices such as portable hard drives should be used to back up the computer you use for your business. A few minutes spent backing up documents and receipts can potentially save a lot of aggravation if you were to lose the originals.

Maintain all contracts in an easy to find place. You should also keep your own contracts, such as with your phone company or Internet provider, in the same place in case YOU have to battle with THEM over service!

Make sure you keep a mileage log for each vehicle that is used for your business. Business-related transportation costs are often tax deductible. If your business requires a lot of road time, you can save a significant amount on your taxes with driving-related deductions.

TIP! One of the greatest resources for your home-based business is a functional website that you can use to sell your products or services. The website will expand your potential market base and increase sales.

Use search engine optimization to boost your work from home business visibility on the Internet. Search engine optimization, sometimes simply called SEO, can be used to get your work from home business more traffic by increasing your visibility on search engines. You can hire someone to help you with your SEO, or you can research it and find out how to do it yourself.

Create a schedule for both your personal and professional time and stick to the times. Set a time of day when you will cease to accept business calls. Allow plenty of time to spend with your family and friends, as well as time to relax and pursue your interests.

When your work from home, it is all too easy to bury yourself in work. You should separate your work and personal life by establishing a specific work zone, as well as setting clear work hours to leave time for your personal life.

TIP! Pick a name that has true meaning. The brand you create will ultimately represent the products you produce so it is important to create a highly recognizable name.

Show your clients a good time, and try to obtain a tax deduction for your expenses. Taking clients or business associates out for meals can be a deduction on your taxes. Remember to save receipts for these meals. You are required to maintain receipts for meals over 75 dollars. You may also need to prove your expenses if audited.

To maximize the success of your home-business financial plan, claim every possible tax deduction related to your business. You will be surprised how much money you could save on your taxes just by taking advantage of your entitled deductions.

When you no longer have inventory of a given item, be sure to inform potential buyers. It is a sure-fire way to upset your customers when they find out their products had to be placed on back order, and will not be ready for immediate delivery. Clearly mark out of stock items, so that they can choose something they?ll receive sooner.

TIP! If you?re running a daycare from your home, then you probably know that having a sufficient amount of help is crucial to your success, as well as your sanity. Even there not enough others around to help you, managing all the kids and their needs will overwhelm you.

Having a contingency fund is an important step in keeping your business financially safe. Your business could eventually run into unexpected circumstances where you will need quick access to cash. Having an emergency fund will ensure the continuity of your business. However, be careful not to use your emergency funds unless it is truly an emergency. Replenish the fund as soon as you can.

When You Sit Down, Does Your Ass Actually Touch the Chair?

There's a hackneyed scientific description of what it means to touch things: your ass never actually "touches" a chair when you sit down, so it goes, but instead is repelled because of electrons that come up against each other. But is that really the case? More »
