Google TV YouTube app updated for better recommendations, search and sharing

Google TV YouTube app updated for better recommendations, search and sharing

It only makes sense that the Google TV initiative to increase personalization would extend to videos served up from its YouTube site, and now the official app has been updated to do just that. The new version brings recommendations meant to pull gems you might like out of the ever growing pile of content available, as well as a way to search between the new YouTube channels on your TV. Also users should notice improved video quality since the app will automatically try to play content at the best available resolution from the start, and if they find something interesting, it now supports +1 sharing to Google+. The new app is already live on Google Play, compatible devices should be pointed that way for the new experience.

Samsung intros 'world's thinnest' external DVD writer, tries to convince you to pack it with your tablet

Generally, a new optical disk drive is nothing to write home about, but how about one that's specifically purposed for tablets and Ultrabooks? That's the pitch Samsung is selling for its SE-218BB DVD / CD writer, which the company also notes as being the world's thinnest external ODD -- because what better to go with your svelte computing devices than more pluggable doohickeys. Cynicism aside, Samsung says this $60 add-on is just 14mm tall, "18 percent thinner than conventional DVD writers" and eight percent less weighty than its standard DVD ODD. The bus-powered unit connects via USB, and it'll work with Macs, PCs and devices running Android 3.1 and up. Oddly fascinated? The drive is currently on-sale worldwide if you're willing carry it along with you. You'll find full details in the press release after the break.

Gym Class Heroes Go For Olympic Glory In 'Fighter' Video

Band takes MTV News behind the scenes of upcoming clip, which stars Olympic hopeful John Orozco.

In previous videos, Gym Class Heroes have shown off their "mutant powers," gone gritty, and even gotten in touch with their inner Lucius Blacks.

But in their upcoming clip for "The Fighter," they're taking a different tack: They're getting real.

"The video is part documentary-style, part-performance [and] it follows the life of John Orozco, a young, up-and-coming, hopefully gold medalist from the Bronx," GCH frontman Travie McCoy told MTV News on the set of the video. "Plus, an awesome, energetic performance from us and Ryan Tedder."

Orozco's story — from a talented Bronx gymnast to training at the U.S. facility in Colorado Springs to perhaps this country's best chance of snagging a gold at the London Olympics — has already caught the attention of outlets like the New York Times, and GCH are hoping their new video will only add to his profile. And provide a soundtrack to his success too.

"Ryan did his thing on the hook, he adds the extra punch," McCoy said. "And with the Olympics and stuff coming up, I think it's going to be the anthem for a lot of people to get pumped up to."

Of course, there are other benefits to having one of the most hotly tipped Olympic hopefuls star in your new video. Namely, you can let someone else stand beneath the spotlight, which, thankfully, takes the pressure off the Heroes and their less-than-stellar acting chops.

"It's great doing a video like this because I feel like a lot of other videos we shoot, we end up sticking to somewhat of a script and act," drummer Matt McGinley laughed. "And I mean, I'm a musician, so it's great to be doing what comes natural."

Could Justin Bieber Perform With An Elvis Hologram?

The creators of Tupac's Coachella hologram reveal other artists they'd like to bring back to life: Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Michael Jackson.

The world can't seem to get enough of that Tupac hologram from the Coachella festival. The late rapper's lifelike image left fans in awe as it performed alongside Snoop Dogg during his set with Dr. Dre.

The people behind the projection system that created the incredibly realistic likeness of the MC are now cooking up ideas of who else they might want to bring back to life.

Speaking to NME, Sanj Surati, head of music at Musion Technology Ltd, explained that one of music's greats could one day perform alongside one of pop's biggest stars. Asked whether there were plans to bring back Elvis Presley and perhaps have him perform next to Justin Bieber, Surati said it "would be a cool thing."

If an Elvis/Bieber collabo can't shake out, Surati explained there are others he'd like to see come to life: "Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, oh, and Michael Jackson would be the ultimate one," he said. "Maybe even Whitney Houston."

As for the future of the famous Tupac-ogram, well, Surati hopes it can be resurrected once again on a bigger-scale tour. "This is obviously a historic and exciting initiative that we're all witnessing currently, and it would make sense for them to bring it to Europe," he said. "And maybe take it to the rest of the world."

Since the debut of the Tupac hologram, fans have been wondering what other beloved performers could find new life using this technology. On the 10-year anniversary of Left Eye's death, there was an unconfirmed report from TMZ that TLC might bring back the group's sassy rapper for a "massive 2012 reunion tour." The group has yet to comment on the rumor.

Which artist would you like to see brought back to life as a hologram? Sound off below!

AnTuTu pegs Galaxy S III as most powerful Android device, potentially reveals its specs

AnTuTu pegs Galaxy S III as most powerful Android device, potentially reveals its specs

Ah, the Galaxy S III. We always knew it'd be a keystone among Android smartphones, but according to the AnTuTu benchmark suite, it'll be the one device to rule them all. While there's no way to verify whether this test is indeed legitimate, all Android users may currently peep the AnTuTu app, which not only shows the smartphone as having bested the mighty Transformer Prime tablet, but it also reveals the most comprehensive set of specs we've yet seen for the Galaxy S III -- again, take this with a grain of salt. The device is said to wield a Samsung Exynos 4212 SoC with a dual-core 1.4GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM and a 4.7-inch, 720p HD display. This lines up similarly with the product listing from Amazon Germany, as the specs also reveal a 12 megapixel primary camera on the rear, along with a 2MP shooter on the front. No big surprises for the OS, which is listed as Android 4.0. Should the benchmark tests turn out to be legitimate, the HTC One X will no doubt have some very stiff competition.
