(AP) ? The Buffalo Bills coaching search went into overdrive Friday, when team officials interviewed three candidates, including Oregon's Chip Kelly, one of college football's hottest prospects.

The Bills announced just before midnight that newly promoted president Russ Brandon and his top executives also interviewed recently fired Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith and Syracuse coach Doug Marrone. The Bills, stationed in Arizona for much of this week, didn't provide details regarding where the interviews took place or how long they lasted.

Next up for Buffalo is a trip to Denver on Saturday, when the team is scheduled to interview Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, according to a person familiar with Buffalo's plans. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the team has not revealed who they've lined up to meet.

The Bills are in the midst of their fifth coaching search since 2001 after Chan Gailey was fired on Monday.

It was a busy day for Kelly, as well. He also interviewed with Cleveland on Friday, and a person familiar with those negotiations said the Browns are nearing a deal with Oregon's offensive mastermind. Kelly's interviews were conducted a day after he led the fifth-ranked Ducks (12-1) to a 35-17 victory over No. 7 Kansas State in the Fiesta Bowl in Arizona.

Following the win, the 49-year-old Kelly said he wanted to get the interview process over "quickly."

Kelly was also supposed to meet with Philadelphia. However, a person familiar with the interviews says the Eagles are "heading in another direction."

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team isn't discussing its negotiations publicly. The person added the Eagles planned to interview several other candidates regardless of any conversations with Kelly.

The Eagles were granted permission Friday to interview Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians and Seahawks defensive coordinator Gus Bradley and are scheduled to meet with McCoy in Denver on Sunday, as well.

The Bills are coming off their second consecutive 6-10 season and have not enjoyed a winning record since a 9-7 finish in 2004. They own the NFL's longest active playoff drought that's now at 13 consecutive seasons.

Buffalo has already interviewed former Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt, who was fired on Monday, as well as Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton.

The Bills' meeting with Smith did not come as a surprise. Several reports surfaced over the past few days that the former Bears coach was interested in the Buffalo job since he was fired by the Bears on Monday. Smith has indirect ties to the Bills through former Bears defensive assistant coach Gill Byrd, who is the father of Buffalo safety Jairus Byrd.

Smith is a defensive-minded coach, who would have an opportunity to put his stamp on Buffalo's revamped but under-achieving defense, which struggled last year. The unit was among the NFL's worst despite the addition of defensive end Mario Williams, who signed a six-year, $100 million contract in free agency in March.

Marrone has been credited for turning around the Orange in four seasons. Syracuse rolled to an 8-5 finish by winning six of its last seven games this season, including a 38-14 win over West Virginia in the Pinstripe Bowl last weekend.

McCoy has become a hot prospect in his fourth season with the Broncos. He's played a key role in helping speed Peyton Manning's transition after the star quarterback signed with the team in free agency last offseason. McCoy has 13 years of NFL experience as an assistant, and previously spent eight seasons working under Broncos coach John Fox in Carolina.

Over his career, McCoy had quarterbacks reach 3,000 yards passing seven times. That includes Manning, who finished sixth in the NFL this season with 4,659 yards.

As the AFC's top seed, the Broncos are off until opening the playoffs on Jan. 12. They've allotted time for interested teams to interview McCoy in Denver this weekend. McCoy has also been linked as a candidate for coaching vacancies in Arizona and Chicago.

Tips And Advice For Dealing With Personal Bankruptcy | Siben ...

TIP! Consider any other options available before filing for personal bankruptcy. Credit counseling is an important option for you to pursue.

Bankruptcy is a complex process. There is more than one type of personal bankruptcy, and your personal financial situation will dictate which type you should choose. Prior to filing your petition, you really need to gain an understanding of how personal bankruptcies work. Here are a few wise tips to help you in your decision.

TIP! As you are heading towards a bankruptcy filing, don?t be tempted to run up cash advances on your credit cards in the belief they will be erased in the legal proceedings. This fraudulent practice is a demonstration of bad faith.

If you?re unsure, then you need to learn what a Chapter 7 bankruptcy can do for you, as opposed to what Chapter 13 does. Be sure you go on the Internet and do your research to see what?s best for you. Learning about bankruptcy is not simple, so call a bankruptcy attorney to make an appointment to ask questions.

TIP! Try and get a second job. Avoid filing bankruptcy by communicating this to your creditors.

A lot of people believe that having a bankruptcy on their credit reports will make it impossible for them to get a loan for years. Although there may be some truth to this, it should still be better than your credit situation was before you filed for bankruptcy. To get your credit worthiness back on track, make sure you make timely payments.

TIP! Do your homework first. If you cannot afford a specialized lawyer, you should think about filing for bankruptcy yourself.

Learn the newest bankruptcy laws before filing. It can be tough to keep up with them on your own, and because they change often, a bankruptcy attorney can help you keep track for the sake of your filing process. Your state?s website should have the information that you need.

TIP! If you plan on filing bankruptcy, never wait too long. Lots of people turn the other shoulder towards their financial woes and hope that they?ll disappear eventually.

Don?t take too long when trying to decide whether you want to file bankruptcy. Although it may be very difficult to admit that bankruptcy is the answer for you, it will be much harder to continue spiraling into a debt quagmire. Speaking with a professional in a timely manner will allow you to receive sound advice that can help you before things get out of hand.

TIP! Make sure you are completely honest when filing for bankruptcy. Hiding your assets is never wise.

Be sure to enlist the help of a lawyer if you?re going to be filing for bankruptcy. You might not understand all of the various aspects to filing for bankruptcy. A personal bankruptcy attorney can help and guide you along through the bankruptcy process.

TIP! If you intend to file bankruptcy soon, you may want to discontinue paying all debts. Find out from a bankruptcy attorney what a court needs to see as a cut off date for the last time you pay anyone you owe money to.

Don?t fear reminding your attorney of any specific details of your case. Lawyers are people too, and sometimes they forget important information and need to be reminded. It is in your best interest to speak out. You are in control of the outcome of your bankruptcy.

TIP! If you are going to be filing for bankruptcy, think about filing Chapter 13. If you currently have some income and don?t have more than $250k in debt, you can declare bankruptcy.

File at exactly the right time to maximize the effect of your bankruptcy. Proper timing is important, especially when it comes to personal bankruptcy. Sometimes you should file immediately; however, there are times when it is better to delay until the worst has passed. Find out when the correct time is for you to file for bankruptcy from a bankruptcy legal professional.

TIP! Be extremely cautious before taking on any new debt. It is quite normal for those making a fresh financial start to be targeted by credit card lenders.

Prior to filing for bankruptcy, discover which assets cannot be seized. There are some assets that cannot be seized through bankruptcy, and the law lists those assets. Make sure that you carefully look over this list prior to filing to discover if your valuable assets will be seized. Without reading the list, you may be shocked at which possessions can be taken from you.

TIP! Make sure you are always honest when filing your petition for bankruptcy. An attempt to hide anything from the court can cause the court to turn down the petition immediately.

You likely now understand that bankruptcy is something that should be undertaken carefully and with great deliberation. If you feel that it is your best option for your current financial state, you should contact an experienced bankruptcy lawyer who can advise you in this turning point in your life.

(AP) ? A new Congress opened for business Thursday to confront long-festering national problems, deficits and immigration among them, in an intensely partisan and crisis-driven era of divided government. "The American dream is in peril," said House Speaker John Boehner, re-elected to his post despite a mini-revolt in Republican ranks.

Moments after grasping an oversized gavel that symbolizes his authority, Boehner implored the assembly of newcomers and veterans in the 113th Congress to tackle the nation's heavy burden of debt at long last. "We have to be willing ? truly willing ? to make this right."

Also on the two-year agenda is the first significant effort at an overhaul of the tax code in more than a quarter century. Republicans and Democrats alike say they want to chop at a thicket of existing tax breaks and use the resulting revenue to reduce rates.

There were personal milestones aplenty as the winners of last fall's races swore an oath of office as old as the republic.

Sens. Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, Mazie Hirono of Hawaii and Deb Fischer of Nebraska were among the newcomers sworn in, raising the number of women in the Senate to a record 20. Tim Scott of South Carolina became the first black Republican on the Senate in more than three decades.

On the first day of a new term, one veteran made a stirring comeback. Republican Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois returned to the Capitol for the first time since suffering a stroke a year ago, walking slowly up the 45 steps to the Capitol with the use of a cane. "Good to see you, guys," he said.

Across the Capitol, children and grandchildren squirmed through opening formalities that ended with Boehner's election as the most powerful Republican in a government where President Barack Obama will soon be sworn in to a second term and his fellow Democrats control the Senate.

"At $16 trillion and rising, our national debt is draining free enterprise and weakening the ship of state," said the Ohio Republican, whose struggles to control his members persisted to the final weekend of the 112th Congress when "fiscal cliff" legislation finally cleared. "The American dream is in peril so long as its namesake is weighed down by this anchor of debt. Break its hold and we will begin to set our economy free. Jobs will come home. Confidence will come back."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he, too, is ready for attempts to rein in federal spending, but laid down a few conditions. "Any future budget agreements must balance the need for thoughtful spending reductions with revenue from the wealthiest among us and closing wasteful tax loopholes," he said. That was in keeping with Obama's remarks after Congress had agreed on fiscal cliff legislation to raise taxes for the wealthy while keeping them level for the middle class.

Boehner and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell have other ideas, both having said in recent days that the days of raising taxes are over.

"Now is the time to get serious about spending," McConnell said. "And if the past few weeks have taught us anything, that means the president needs to show up early this time." People won't "tolerate the kind of last-minute crises that we've seen again and again over the past four years as a result of this president's chronic inactivity and refusal to lead on the pressing issues of the day."

While neither Boehner nor Reid mentioned immigration in their opening-day speeches, Obama is expected to highlight the issue in the first State of the Union address of his new term. Lawmakers are already working toward a compromise they hope can clear both houses.

Most Democrats have long favored legislation to give millions of illegal immigrants a chance at citizenship, and Republicans have stoutly resisted. Now, though, many within the GOP appear ready to reconsider, after watching with alarm as Obama ran up an estimated 71 percent of the Hispanic vote in winning re-election over Mitt Romney in November.

There is little doubt that fiscal issues are at the forefront, though, as they have been since the economy cratered more than four years ago. The issue dominated the just-ended Congress from beginning to end as tea party-backed lawmakers pressed relentlessly to cut spending and reduce deficits.

They met with decidedly mixed success.

They won Obama's signature on $1 trillion in cuts over a decade after using the debt limit as leverage, but were forced into a humiliating surrender a year ago after trying to block an extension in payroll tax cuts. And in the last major act of the 112th Congress, they were forced to swallow legislation that contained next-to-no spending cuts, raised tax rates on the wealthy while keeping them even for the middle class and boosted deficits by an estimated $4 trillion over a decade.

And now, the newly enfranchised Congress will begin by raising deficits. National flood insurance legislation to help victims of Hurricane Sandy will create slightly more than $9 billion in red ink if it passes as expected on Friday. A follow-up disaster aid measure that Boehner has said will be brought to a vote on Jan. 15 would add $27 billion ? more if the bill grows, as seems likely, after it is reconciled with a $60-billion Senate version.

The next big clash is expected to begin within weeks. A two-month delay in automatic spending cuts expires at the end of February. As well, the administration will seek authority to borrow more money in late winter or early spring, and financing expires for most government agencies on March 27.

Republicans have said they intend to seek significant savings from Medicare, Medicaid and other government benefit programs to gain control over spending. Obama has said he won't bargain over the government's borrowing authority. He has also said is open to changes in benefit programs, but would face resistance on that from liberal Democrats.

Boehner will lead a House that has a Republican majority of 233-200, with two vacancies, a loss of eight seats for the GOP. Fourteen Republicans declined to vote for him, a reflection of their unhappiness with his leadership, but several more defections would have been needed to deny him a first-ballot victory.

Democrats hold a 55-45 majority in the Senate, and control two more seats than they did the past two years.

Reid and McConnell are negotiating over possible changes in the Senate's filibuster rules to make the movement of legislation more efficient, even when it is hotly contested.

3 Huge Myths About The Trillion Dollar Coin Plan ... - Business Insider

The hottest idea to save the economy from another debt ceiling fight (and a potential default) is the Trillion Dollar Platinum Coin.

In order to understand how it works, we first need a very quick lesson in how the government spends money.

This is a super-crude version of it, but here's the gist:

The Treasury Department has a bank account at The Federal Reserve, specifically the New York branch of the Federal Reserve. When the Treasury writes a check to a company (say a defense contracted owed $100 million) that check is "cashed" at the Fed. When the Treasury needs money (which is all the time) it sells bonds in an auction. The proceeds of those bonds go into the account.

Okay, now there's this thing called the debt ceiling, which sets a maximum cap on the amount of debt that the US can carry at one time. Every time we come close to hitting it, the US has to ask Congress to raise the limit. In recent years, since the rise of the Tea Party, what used to be a mildly frustrating event has grown into a systemic economic threat.

So where does the Trillion Dollar Platinum Coin fit in?

In the section of the law which specifically relates to the Treasuries ability to create money (coins and bills) section K says this:

?(k) The Secretary may mint and issue platinum bullion coins and proof platinum coins in accordance with such specifications, designs, varieties, quantities, denominations, and inscriptions as the Secretary, in the Secretary?s discretion, may prescribe from time to time.

In other words, when it comes to platinum coins, the Secretary (who is currently Tim Geithner) has discretion on the designs, specifications, quantities, and denominations of platinum coinage.

So let's say, Tim Geithner decided to stamp out a $1 trillion coin. What does that accomplish?

The idea is that after it was created, Geithner could walk it over to the Federal Reserve, and deposit it in the Treasury's bank account. Then the Treasury, rather than having to issue new debt (because remember, Congress hasn't raised the limit) can make sure its checks clear against this money.

Voila, crisis averted!

Now, that sounds all nice, but people have all kinds of objections upon hearing this idea. So we'll address them here.

MYTH #1: This will cause massive hyperinflation.

This is an understandable fear, because the idea of creating new money out of thin air to pay our debts brings to mind countries like Weimar and Zimbabwe, and trillion dollar bills being tossed about it in the streets.

But this is not about using the coin to pay back our debts, it's staying within the law, while avoiding the technically nonsensical debt ceiling.

Think about the mechanics, the trillion dollar coin goes to the Fed, but in terms of the real economy, government spending takes place exactly as normal. Now it is true that the Treasury might not be doing bond purchases at this time, and that this could leave more money in the system, that could heat up and cause inflation, but this is easily remedied, because the Fed has a gigantic pile of Treasuries it's sitting on that it could sell back into the open market to "sterilize" the government spending.

The bottom line is: Because this trillion dollar coin isn't being used as "helicopter money" (money dropped directly into the economy) you don't get the inflationary effects you're used to seeing when you hear about governments creating money in large denominations.

This is purely a technical fix for a bad situation.

MYTH #2: The trillion dollar coin will destroy the dollar!

This is pretty much the same as the first argument. What would destroy the dollar is if the government just started printing $1 trillion bills, declared them legal tender, and then dropped them from a helicopter onto cities. Soon, the buying power of a single dollar bill would be zilch. But alas, because the coin isn't a direct injection into the economy, but rather a stopgap that lets the government continue to spend on various services, you don't have that destructive effect.

MYTH #3: If this idea is so great, then minting a $16 trillion dollar coin could just solve our debt problem!

This line of reasoning ignores the point completely. People who say this (or say we should print a $100 trillion coin) are mistakenly thinking that the point of this exercise is to pay off our debts and get out of the hole.

That's not it. Our debts are plenty manageable at current levels, and with interest rates the way the are. The point is to stay within the law, while getting around the technical problem of the debt ceiling. So there's no point to the $16 trillion coin or the $100 trillion coin, or anything else so absurd. This is not about having money to spend. This is about avoiding a legal crisis where the government had obligations to much (such as on its debt) but didn't have the authority to borrow and spend money.

And furthermore, if we actually did try to eliminate our debts just by creating a coin, we would create the aforementioned inflation problem (via a massive expansion of money) and it would result in buyers less inclined to buy dollar assets.

BOTTOM LINE: This won't create hyperinflation, and it's not the solution to all of our economic problems. It's just a way to stay within the law, while avoiding the debt ceiling nonsense.

Is it silly? Of course it is. But what's sillier is a rich nation having a debate on whether it will pay what it owes, which is what the debt ceiling fight is all about. So in the face of such silliness, this unfortunately may be required.

Branden R. Williams, Business Security Specialist ? The SBIC 2013 ...

January 3rd, 2013 by Branden Williams

Today the Security for Business Innovation Council (SBIC) released their 2013 Trends Report which is chocked full of lots of great stuff for security professionals to consider as they begin to tackle the challenges this year will bring. While this report is not like anything the SBIC has released in the past, the four key findings are quite compelling and true to much of what my mission has been over the last several years. They are:

  • Boost risk and business skills. Readers of my column (which has not been updated here in a while, but will be soon) know that the security professional that understands how the business works will be much more effective in adding value to his position and to the company. We?ve moved beyond the line of separation between IT and Business, yet many security professionals try to do their jobs without an understanding of either.
  • Middle-management outreach. Often times security professionals push policy into the organization without explanation or even input from the folks ultimately impacted by the change. This has to change to ensure that the policy is followed.
  • Supply-chain issues. This applies both for the informational supply chain as well as for the actual movement of goods (which is often coordinated electronically).
  • Build and act upon tech savvy action plans. Security professionals face many disruptive technologies, and instead of shunning or ignoring them, we must enable them to work safely in our companies.

Go check out the report and see this video of EMC?s CSO discussing some of the key findings.

Driving to Mexico from California: Travel Checklist ? AIS Blog

If you?re planning to drive to Mexico from California ? or Arizona, Texas, or New Mexico, for that matter ? it?s important that you?re prepared. While most locals are well-versed in how to cross the border safely and efficiently, many tourists often get hung up at the border, purchasing Mexican auto insurance and vehicle permits before they can legally cross.

In this post, we?ll take a look at everything you need to cross, as well as some important things to consider, in order to get the most out of your trip to Mexico.

Mexican Vehicle Insurance ? Because the Mexican government does not recognize U.S. vehicle insurance, motorists traveling into Mexico must purchase Mexican auto insurance. Just like in the U.S., you can purchase a comprehensive policy, or one that carries the minimum liability. Policies can be short-term or long-term, depending on the length of your trip.

Mexico Vehicle Permit ? If you plan to drive onto the Mexican mainland, you will need a Mexico vehicle permit. You do not need a permit if you only plan to travel into Baja and Senora.

Passport ? As of January 2007, you need a passport to get back into the United States from Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean.

Proof of Ownership ? If you are planning on towing a Motorcycle or ATV behind your vehicle, you must be able show ownership of that vehicle before bringing it into Mexico. Make sure you bring state registration info or other ownership documents with you.

Prepaid Phone or SIM Card ? It?s a good idea to keep a cell phone on you for emergencies. Because international calling fees can be high, it?s an even better idea to buy a prepaid phone or SIM card for your trip.

Roadside Emergency Kit ? It?s a good idea to have an emergency kit with you wherever you go, but especially when you?re driving in the desert or on unfamiliar roads. Your kit should include your cell phone charger, water, blankets, non-perishable food, a first aid kit and a flashlight.
