Social network of food picks best Thanksgiving recipe

Hal Hodson, technology reporter

Unleash big data on that Thanksgiving turkey! For anyone preparing a feast today, the hidden connections between your foodstuffs probably aren't your first concern.

But they do exist, and it turns out that they play a large part in determining how well-liked any given recipe will be. Lada Adamic from the University of Michigan downloaded 46,337 recipes from the website?Allrecipes.com, then mined the text for ingredients used, the type of meal, the kind of event and the region where the recipe originated. Combining these data with the reviews each recipient received, Adamic built a model that can predict - with around 70 per cent accuracy - how many stars a recipe would receive based solely on its ingredients. This should help you put together a recipe that will unthrone the current top-ranked Thanksgiving meal on the site - awesome sausage, apple and cranberry stuffing.

Adamic's network analysis is similar to the kind which lets computer scientists understand where slang words originate, or which Romantic novels are the most influential.

She also built a second network that showed which ingredients are most interchangeable, by analysing the alternatives for each recipe suggested in the millions of reviews. Apple sauce for vegetable oil is a popular one, for example.

Writing on her personal blog, Adamic noted the most popular Thanksgiving substitutions, according to her Allrecipies.com model. "Cranberries end up substituting for other kinds of fruits and even somehow for chocolate. In the fat category, olive oil and butter seem to be recommended as substitutes for things such as margarine. Yams are often recommended as a substitute for sweet potatoes (more so than the other way around)," she writes.

University of Michigan PhD student Edwin Teng even went as far as to whip up a Thanksgiving- specific version of the network. Unsurprisingly, turkey, cranberry and pumpkin all feature prominently. Tuck in!

RolePlayGateway?

Hello, you must be interested in doing a roleplay with me. Splendid!
However there are some things that you must know first.

Terms

1. Literacy and the assurance that you will be posting (on average) 900 - 1200 words is necessary. I want you to have good spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Do not contact me if you do not meet that requirement, it is by far the most important thing that I ask. A good reply cannot be done in a sentence. I also want to make sure that by you accepting the role as my roleplaying partner will try and post their best at all times, yes WritersBlock infects us all at some point, but sometimes you just have to push through it.

2. Your characters cannot be in any way cliche, unoriginal, and how can I say it.... uh- boring. Yes we get it your girl is an emotional wreck and your guy just wants to be a player. Wow, they should really name you the god(ess) of originality. (If you couldn't tell I was being sarcastic.) I want your characters to be deep, mind-boggling, and someone that I will have to consider responding to in a realistic and decent manner. In an agreement I will try my upmost to make my characters interesting, if at any point you have any concerns with my character, and believe that they do not match status then please tell me. I'll try my best to give them an unexpected twist, I want to make you happy, like you should want for me.

3. I prefer to play males over females, I find them much easier to control and have a better grasp and concept of playing them to their strengths. I can play females fine and dandy however, and so you don't need to worry. However be warned that my characters all have tempers and are sarcastic lil' monsters, no matter what the gender is. They're also between the ages of 22 - 32, please don't have a problem playing within this age range.

4. I'm not sure if this site has a designated place for 1x1s and group roleplays, however I am always better at doing roleplays by topic rather than PM. While I'll stll do them by message, doing them by topic is often much easier for me to be able to keep track of. (Besides I enjoy reading over our past work, I always feel like I'm reading a novel!) Just state your preference and I'll see what can be done.

5. I do have a life, I have a lot of things to stay up to date on and so I can't be on 24/7, however I always try to make the best with the time I got, and I can always be found thinking of replies when I'm not supposed to. That's another thing, I like to think about my replies and often it will be a few days to a week before I respond again (unless I'm having a muse overload.) So don't think I'm abandoning you if I don't respond just after you post.

6. You must be willing to help contribute to the roleplay as much as I am. I have been in roleplays where I've always had to pull most of the weight, and I don't like that. If you want to roleplay with me then you're going to have to be willing to help put in some effort. Think of it as a 50/50 deal with business partners. Our product can only succeed if both partners play their part.

7. I'm sorry to anyone who likes/loves romance, but it's not my thing. I will do it as a brief subplot but nothing that will affect the roleplay drastically, I will most certainly never do a roleplay which is founded off of romance, I hardly got through 'The Notebook' without ripping my eyes out. I only play heterosexual males, and bisexual females. Sorry I don't do gay romance. (Lesbian is fine though.)

Happy Thanksgiving with a Green Bean Casserole! ? Surviving ...

by Kimberly on November 22, 2012

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family?.Jennie and I are SO thankful for you, our readers, friends and supporters. :) We hope you have a wonderful day today with your family!

We will be heading over to my parents today to spend the day with family and RELAX. My dad has gotten a smoked turkey this year which is a little different for us so that should be interesting. I also made my mom get a regular turkey to roast because I?m all about tradition (and drive most of my family crazy about it).

Speaking of tradition, I offered to make and bring a green bean casserole today. The only problem is that I HATE the traditional recipe of gbc. I can?t stand the cream of mushroom soup and soggy canned green beans. So this year, I have been on a mission to find a home made recipe that is delicious and will give us the same flavors as the original green bean casserole recipe.

I found The Best Ever Green Bean Casserole recipe and gave it a shot and although I did made a few changes and added Wildtree?s Rancher Steak Rub to it (I add this to everything savory that I cook?literally.) the taste test was so far a success! I also made it with Onion Crunch for the topping and it is SO yummy, definitely a must try recipe! LOEB?S ONION CRUNCH? is a crispy, fried onion topping made from onions that are naturally low in carbs, low in sodium with no cholesterol and 0 grams of trans fat. Made from 100% real onions they are a great addition to your favorite foods and recipes! If you haven?t tried Onion Crunch before, you should definitely give them a try?I am hooked!

Israel targets Gaza bank as diplomats negotiate truce

It's estimated that nearly 40 Hamas militants have been assassinated in the last six days as the fighting escalates between Gaza and Israel. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

By NBC News staff

As Israel and Hamas exchanged?more fire overnight into Tuesday, diplomats in Cairo worked furiously toward a ceasefire agreement.?

During the overnight strikes, of which there were 100, Israel Defense Forces targeted the National Islamic Bank, which Hamas uses to pay its employees, according to its blog.

It has been a lopsided fight since the violence began in southern Israel seven days ago, with more than 100 dead in Gaza and three dead in Israel.

The conflict between the two sides ratcheted up after Israel launched an air strike Wednesday that killed Ahmed al-Jabari, Hamas?s top military leader. Hamas, deemed a terrorist organization by the U.S. and Israel, won parliament seats in Gaza in 2006 and took control of the area in 2007.

Israel's declared goal is to deplete Gaza arsenals and press Hamas into stopping cross-border rocket fire that has plagued Israeli border towns for years.

But both sides are amenable to a truce and have stated their conditions: Hamas demands that Israel stop killing its leaders and asks for more freedom to travel and to import goods, NBC?s Richard Engel reported. According to al-Jazeera news service, Khaled Meshaal, a Hamas leader, said Israel must lift a six-year blockade of the Gaza Strip.

Smoke rises from the Al Shoroq building, which houses media offices, after it was hit in an Israeli air strike in Gaza city overnight into Tuesday.

Israel has asked for a ceasefire, according to an Egyptian diplomat, more talks and that Hamas deliver its weapons.

In Gaza, Israeli drones have targeted Hamas militants, but those militants often reside in densely populated areas, and civilians are among the casualties. Hamas will not say how many of its militants have been killed, but NBC?s Richard Engel said his count is around 40.

In Israel, the Iron Dome defense system?has been praised for shooting down rockets launched by Hamas ? 130 rockets were launched on Monday. The Iron Dome has been a huge success, reports NBC?s Martin Fletcher, but it misses two out of 10 rockets.

The Iron Dome system is also pricey -- $30 million a battery, of which Israel has five. Israel needs 13 to protect the whole country. Each rocket costs $100,000 but is viewed as well worth the cost ? by saving lives, there is less pressure on the government to invade Gaza, Fletcher explained. Israel also has more time to negotiate a truce.

Egyptian diplomats and youth activists have visited Gaza in the last six days ? unheard of in the past. For the newly-elected Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, the negotiations could determine whether Egypt can once again play a role in solving the Middle East?s big problems, reports NBC?s Ayman Mohyeldin.

The anti-missile system made in Israel and helped by American money, recognizes which rockets will hit an inhabited area and knocks them out while ignoring the others. NBC's Martin Fletcher reports.

A Bedroom Tale | Three Times the Giggles

Once upon a time, three little babies were born. They were adorable. They were tiny. They were identical. Their parents had bought a house a couple of months prior to the birth, and while it was small, they knew it would hold their soon-to-be family of 5. They set up the nursery, and brought those little babies home?

Those three little babies grew, and grew, and grew. Before their parents knew it, they were active, slightly crazy, toddlers. Those silly boys learned how to climb out of their cribs around the age of 2.5 years old, and their parents decided it was time for a big boy room and beds. Oh my.

The parents spent a couple of days painting the room, and when they were done, realized it looked like a Kansas University bedroom. Whoops! See, the parents didn?t grow up around here, nor did they attend any of the local colleges, so their loyalties lie with none of the schools.

The boys loved their new room and new beds, and there was great rejoicing (and bedtime partying) at the house.

Two and a half years and one sister later, the room and house had been outgrown. However, the parents realized this was not a good time to try to sell and move, so they thought outside the box.

Hmmmmm?. their boys were getting too big for their toddler beds, and yet twin beds or even two bunk beds would not fit in their current room. Solution? Switch bedrooms.

The mom was slightly annoyed that there wasn?t enough time to re-paint the room before squeezing all of their belongings into it, but has determined that will be a good winter project.

In August, the father began building some beds. Yep. Building them! Since becoming a homeowner 5 and a half years ago, he?s become more and more handy, and the instructions said a beginner could handle the beds, so he took the project on.

After careful measuring and planning, the parents decided to build this bunk bed and this loft bed. And so the father got to work, collecting tools, wood, safety goggles and screws.

Many of his nights were spent in the basement, working on the beds. Finally, in early October he announced he was almost ready to bring them upstairs to finish assembling them! So the little boys? aunt came over and helped their mother paint their new room a nice, neutral blue color ? perfect for growing boys, but not crazy like their first room had been.

A week or so later, the beds began their migration upstairs?

There was great excitement in the house that weekend! The bunk beds were assembled first, and then a week later the loft bed made it?s way upstairs, and into the bedroom. During that week in between beds being assembled, the boys rotated who slept on the floor, and the parents were relieved to see their 5 year olds thought that was cool and fun!

Now the room is done. The three big boys, who were once three little babies, now have a much bigger room and much bigger beds. They have room to play with toys they don?t want their little sister to get ahold of. They have their own bathroom, and a larger closet that they?ve even been known to play in.

Whether this family is in their small home for 10 more months, or 10 more years, the parents have deemed this room-swapping decision to be a good one. The mother is highly impressed with the father?s increasing handy-man skills, and is already plotting what other items from the Ana White website she can have him build, and the father is rather proud of the beds, but dreading the honey-do list he knows is coming.

While the little sister is not a fan of being shut out of her brothers? new room, the mom loves that her boys will go back to their room to play a board game, or with their legos, and peace fills the house (with exception of the sound of little sister wailing at the brothers? door for a few minutes). The parents are also happy to see their little boys so good at taking turns on each of the beds. There is no arguing at night with who?s turn it is to sleep on the loft, or top bunk, and so the rotating is working wonderfully.

And they lived happily ever after!

The end.
